Word Problem Preparation

When working on Math word problems, I've noticed a tendency for some students to "go through the motions", i.e. dive into solving equations before necessarily understanding what they're trying to figure out. This can lead to confusion or slow the problem-solving process.

One way to help prevent that is to write in your own words what the question is asking before you start the algebra operations. Ideas for other helpful habits?
