Direct and indirect objects

As a tutor, I like teaching direct and indirect object alongside transitive and intransitive verbs. Transitive verbs are incomplete without a direct object such as Art runs ____. I always tell my students to ask themselves who or what to answer what is the direct object. In this example, Art is running where. It is incomplete so it has a transitive verb. An intransitive verb cannot take a direct object on the other hand. The verb, for example, arrive is intransitive. I arrive is complete without a direct object so it is an intransitive verb.

This is a hard concept for students. I would not teach students this unless they are at the intermediate level or above.
