I began tutoring through WyzAnt in October of 2010 as a college student. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was so excited when I got my first job opportunity. As a future teacher, I can't be more thankful to have stumbled across this website in a search for a job I can handle, and enjoy while in school myself. My first student was a high school freshman girl who needed help in Geometry. Sure I was nervous at first because I didn't have a ton of experience in tutoring, but knew it would be good practice for when I become a teacher. This student, after two months, considered me as more than just her tutor - a friend. I couldn't help but smile at the fact that one of my students considers me as a friend. I never want to just feel like I am a student's tutor because I am no better than any of them. Of course I am better at the subjects I tutor in than my students are, but that's as far as it goes. I later gained two more students, and helped all three of them finish the school year. I think the saddest part of being a tutor is realizing that there may not be very many job opportunities over summer. But then again, who could honestly say after tutoring through this site they don't enjoy what they do? My expectations for tutoring through WyzAnt have been surpassed completely and I am excited for the opportunities that away when school starts up in the fall. You never know what each of your students will be like, but that's part of the job in tutoring. Getting to know your students can really help them feel more comfortable in being tutored. And learning how to help each individual can vary from student to student, which is something I enjoy. All in all, my experience as a math tutor through WyzAnt has been amazing and I definitely want to be around long term!
