Holiday Opportunities for Students

Any holiday of the year, Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, St. Patricks's Day, Easter, May Day, Labor Day, Hallowe'en, Christmas, New Year's, or Martin Luther King Day offers an opportunity for a tutor to provide a simple art activity for the students to emphasize that day. Perhaps it could be some words from that famous person, a heart-shaped art project, a Christmas tree drawn on some "squared" paper, or a pumpkin or black cat, these activities introduce the student to our culture and our holidays. Also, students are drawn into art activities such as working with clay, paint, construction paper, scissors and glue, or maybe making dioramas (using shoeboxes) for the holidays, and tutors can take advantage of that by drawing students in and then stating important concepts or ideas relating to that holiday.
