The use of graphic organizers or symbols are excellent tools for increasing learning and understanding of new concepts. Students need to learn strategies that work. One thing that parents might do is to implement a new strategy or learning tool a week and provide multiple opportunities for your child to become proficient at utilizing that strategy. For example, if you would like your child to be able to learn the concept of identifying similarities and differences, provide your child with daily supplemental worksheets to strengthen that skill. You may use Venn diagrams, analogies, and metaphors. These tools provide students with a visual of the concepts that they are learning and graphic organizers can actually be a fun way to learn.
