I think it is important for everyone to have some exposure to calculus. It is a necessary component to understand the world around us, in the actions of the physical world and the financial markets. A little bit of calculus would go a long way towards making our populous capable of more informed decisions.

I had the pleasure of tutoring some AP calculus students in the past and have always thought it a shame that so many programs still teach math at this level by rote. There is no development of the foundations - of limits and sequences. Instead, there is a rush to higher level concepts like differential equations and multiple integrals. Young people are capable of and interested in so much more, and we as teachers need to feed that interest and raise the bar for society.
