Q. Where will we meet for tutoring?
A. We will try to find a suitable place that is convenient for both of us. Though I do travel to meet you, time and distance are important factors in making this work feasible and profitable for me, so I try to find locations that minimize my travel time, while also providing convenience to you.
Q. How will we decide on a time to meet?
A. We will try to find a suitable time that is convenient for both of us.
Q. When are you available to tutor?
A. It varies from week to week, but my general availability begins at 10:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, and ends at 9:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and at 3:00 pm Saturday. Please contact me for my current availability.
Q. How long will each session be?
A. The session length can vary, depending on the subject, the student, and the schedule. Unless otherwise agreed, the session times will be two (2) hours each.
Q. Why do you recommend two (2) hours per session?
A. Through my experience as a teacher and as a tutor, I have discovered that, in general, two hours is the right amount of time to maximize the learning experience for the student. With a one (1) hour session, there is too much start up and wind down to make the session as profitable as it could be. While this would make my work as a tutor easier, because it would mean less mental effort on my part, I don't think it is best for the student—or for the wallet! In most cases, three (3) hours, on the other hand, is too long for the student to get the most out of the experience, because the mental energy and necessary focus diminishes by slow degrees past the two (2) hour mark. Some students can handle longer sessions, however, and if I believe that this is right for your student (or for you, if you are the student), then I will jot hesitate to suggest it. (SAT and ACT prep are examples of sessions that can be valuable if they are longer, but even then, it will depend on the student). In general, then, the student gets the most out of a two (2) hour session and the wallet gets the best bang for its buck out of a two (2) hour session.
Q. Is there a way we can verify your background?
A. There are two ways you can easily verify my background. WyAnt has conducted a background check which they make available to you. There are also student reviews and ratings available through my tutor profile.
Q. What subject(s) do you specialize in?
A. I specialize in what are called the “Humanities” or the “Liberal Arts.” All English-related subjects (reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, literature, etc.), Study Skills, and ACT/SAT Prep are my highest expertise. I am well-versed in all the high school mathematics, and most of the high school sciences, as well. I am capable of tutoring introductory Latin, Greek, Spanish, and French.
Q. Do you have experience tutoring students with learning disabilities?
A. Yes. If you or your student has a learning disability that you would like to discuss with me, simply contact me to let me know and we can speak by telephone to discuss the specific circumstances you or your student faces.
Q. What is your position on the value of the SAT and/or ACT?
A. The fact that I help students prepare for the SAT and the ACT is in no way an endorsement of them nor a recommendation to take them. They are poor measures of intelligence and should be viewed merely as tools for helping accomplish your schooling goals. If you would like more information, please ask me, and I'll be happy to discuss it with you.
Q. Do you help students prepare for any other standardized tests?
A. I provide services for GRE prep and ISEE prep but not for any others. If you have particular needs in preparing for a test and you would like to know if I can help you, please feel free to ask me.
Q. What is your cancellation policy?
A. Cancellations for a scheduled session that occur at 24 hours or less prior to the scheduled start time will be billed in full. Cancellations that occur between 24 and 48 hours prior to the schedule start time will be billed at half the scheduled session.
Q. Even though I found you through WyzAnt, would you be willing to work with me individually outside of WyzAnt, and if so, would it be possible to get a discount?
A. No. WyzAnt provides a useful service both to you and to me. They deserve the portion of your payment that they keep as payment for their services. They offer you as a student, a parent, a guardian, or payor a level of security and confidence that you would not receive if you merely hired a tutor from Craigslist or other personal advertising or classifieds service. It is well worth your while to use WyzAnt’s secure system and to know that you are getting a quality tutor from a respected source.
