Hypothesis Vs Theory

I had an interesting question from a student this past weekend. The difference between a hypothesis and a theory. In simple terms, a hypothesis is an educated guess. It's an assumption that needs to be proven. A theory on the other hand, is a hypothesis that has been tested many times. With numerous testing, it is accepted as a true statement. Until someone proves it is untrue, the statement stays a theory. Certain chemistry textbooks and websites have explanations but make it hard for a student to understand the differences. The reason for the post is for people to see a simple way of explaining the difference between a hypothesis and theory.
