My son is in the gifted class for language arts in 6th grade. His teacher typically assigns vocabulary flash cards for the students to complete weekly. He has struggled with learning the new words this way because this is the first year my "smart" son has really had to study. I created a vocabulary game in which he has to pick the definition that goes with the correct word. For every word/definition he matches he gets to reveal a card which is part of a puzzle. Once all the words and definitions are matched, he has his picture revealed. The first picture I chose was one of his sports heroes, Cam Newton. He improved his vocabulary grades from 30's and 60's up to 80's and 90's. It's good to know the methods I learned in classroom teaching still work today on individuals.
