Let's start by listing what we know:

a + c = 148

12a + 9c = 1410

With the amount of multiplication to be used to eliminate, I believe substitution would be easier:

a = 148 - c

If we take a look at 12a + 9c = 1410, we can see that a three can be factored out. Maybe this can help keep the math a little easier to manage:

4a + 3c = 470

Now we put in our value of a into the equation:

4(148 - c) + 3c = 470

592 - 4c + 3c = 470

592 - c = 470

-c = -122

c = 122

a = 148 - 122

a = 26

Now to check our answers by using the original equation:

12 * 26 + 9 * 122 = 1410

312 + 1098 = 1410

1410 = 1410

So there are 26 adults, and 122 children.
