Let R = raw hide treat price
Let B = beef-flavored bone price
3 raw hide treats and 2 beef-flavored bones cost $1.78 ==>
3R + 2B = 1.78
Exchanging a beef-flavored bone for a raw hide treat costs 16 cents ===>
R - B = 0.16 ==> R = B + 0.16
Substitute this value for R in the 1st equation to get
3(B + 0.16) + 2B = 1.78
3B + 0.48 + 2B = 1.78
5B = 1.30
B = 0.26
Therefore R = B + 0.16 = 0.26 + 0.16 = 0.42
So a single raw hide treat costs $0.42 or 42 cents
Check: 3R + 2B = 3(0.42) + 2(0.26) = 1.26 + 0.52 = 1.78
R - B = 0.42 - 0.26 = 0.16 = 16 cents
