L = length

W = width

Get the equations from the sentences:

The perimeter of a rectangle is 24 in

**2L + 2W = 24**

length is 3 times its width

**L = 3W**

Solve the pair of equations...It looks like the best method will be subbing 3W for L in the 1st equation. This gives:

2*3W + 2W = 24

Simplify and solve for W

Once you have W, use either equation to get L
