If you know that 24 students in the class are reading above average, you know that 6 are not. You know that 6 out of 30 students are not reading above average level, and the question is how to express that as a percent.

The equation for percent = (part/whole)(100).

In this case, the part of the class that is not reading above average is 6. The whole is the class, or 30.

(6/30)(100)=percent of class not reading above average

(.2)(100)=percent of class not reading above average

20% of class not reading above average
