Here's what we know:
j + h = 83 (they together have 83 coins)
h - 7 = j (j has 7 fewer coins than h)
 
We have a value for a variable, so plug it in:
h - 7 + h = 83
simplify:
2h - 7 = 83
Add 7 to both sides:
2h - 7 + 7 = 83 + 7
2h = 90
Finish isolating h by dividing by 2, and you'll have h.
