The first English colonists settled in Jamestown. Prior settlement failed in Roanoake and the Spanish settled St. Augustine. Assuming the question is about the English settlements, yes, the purpose of the Jamestown settlement was to find valuable materials (they hoped gold) to bring back to England. The Jamestown colony did eventually provide valuable tobacco and other crops but this took a while.
However in Massachusetts, although the colony was supposed to be profitable, the colonists themselves went in order to establish a home where they could practice a separatist religion.
