The variable S is the short piece, M is the medium (third) piece, and L is the long piece. Added together, they equal 105.

S=?
M=1/2L
L=40+S

S+1/2(40+S)+40+S=105
2 1/2S+60=105
S=18

Now that you know what S is, plug 18 into the third equation to find out how much L is. once you know L, plug it into the second equation to find M.
