The focus and directrix are the same distance from from the parabola.

The distance formula is

*d = √[(x - x*_{1})^{2}+ (y - y_{1})^{2}]So in this case, the distance between the focus and the parabola is:

*d = √[(x + 7)*

^{2}+ (y + 5)^{2}]This has to be the same as the distance between the directrix and the parabola:

*d = √[(x + 4)*
