Hi Cassie,

The easiest way to figure this out is to first see how far the truck can go on just 1 liter. We divide 245 by 35 to figure out how far that would be.

245 kilometers = 7 km also known as 7 km/liter.

35 liters 1 liter

So the truck can travel 7 kilometers for each liter of fuel.

Now we know how far the truck goes on one liter, and we want to know how far it travels on 100 liters. So we simply multiply 7 km/liter x 100 liters, and you have 700 km!

Hope that helps!

Hi Cassie,

In many of proportion questions, the test writer tries to trick the test taker by asking for the answer in a different unit. For example, in your question, if you were asked to find the number of kilometers on 13 gallons of gasoline, you will have to convert liters to gallons first.

Just be aware of these small but important details.

assign a variable (letter X) to the quantity you are asked to find.

In this case, it is the distance traveled by the truck using 100 liters of fuel.

We are told the truck can travel 245 km using 35 liters of fuel.

Therefore the answer will be proportional.

A ratio is relationship between two quantities expressed as a fraction.

When you have an equation where one fraction (ratio) equals a second fraction (ratio), it is called a proportion.

When you set up your ratios, it is easiest to put your variable on top in the first fraction.

X kilometers = 100 liters

245 kilometers 35 liters

multiply both sides by 245 in order to isolate your variable X

X = 100 x 245 / 35 now do the calculation to get your answer

X = 700 km

This is a proportional problem.

245 Km = 35 Liters

x Km = 100 Liters

24500 = 35x

x = 24500/35

Cassie,

Set up a proportion where 35/245 ( liters/miles ) = 100/x. ( liters/miles) Then cross multiply 35x =245 times 100. Then divide both sides by 35 to obtain your answer. I hope this is helpful.
