how do you multiply and estimate to make sure your answer reasonable

Well I know how to multiply I just don't know how to estimate to get to my reasonable answer and some questions also use parentisis so does that mean I have another step to do.

Comments

The process of estimation is dependent on the operation (add, subtract, multiply, divide, etc. and the data presented.

"some questions also use parentisis"
parentheses are used to indicate multiplication, as in 3(4) = 12
or in algebra as, for example, to explain the distributive property: a(b+c) = ab + ac.
298(31) can be ESTIMATED AS 300(30), which you can do mentally--approximately 9,000.
