We have two points from which to write the equation of a line:

Letting x = number of hours ... horizontal axis

Letting y = rate in km/h ... vertical axis

(1, 5), (2, 3)

slope: m = (3-5)/(2-1) = -2

y = -2x + b

Using one of the points given as (x,y) solve for b:

5 = -2(1) + b

b = 7

Your equation in two variables is: y = -2x + 7

To graph the equation for the first 4 hours just replace x

with 1, 2, 3, 4 and in each case solve for y. Plot the points

and graph the line.
