Determine an experiment to test where the rate-determining step in this reaction is release of chloride. Hint: chlorine has two different isotopes in high abundance.
 
The reaction is oxidation of 1-phenyl ethanol with hypochlorite and acetic acid.

This question refers to the isotope effect, namely, that the heavier isotopes make slightly stronger bonds. Thus, if you hypothesize that the RDS for this reaction is the elimination of chlorine, then the reaction involving only 37Cl isotopes would proceed measurably slower than the one with all 35Cl's.
