a very bright student is described as having an IQ that is three standard deviations above the mean. if this student's IQ is reported as a z score , what would the z-score be?

When referring to a z-score, the problem is assuming that you converted it to a Normal(0,1) distribution where 0 is the mean, 1 is the standard deviation.  
 
3 standard deviations above the mean would be 0 +3 = 3

This is the correct answer. That is how z scores are reported: as a + or -.

Using the formula
Z=(X-μ)/δ
and plugging in The formula the values we obtain
Z=((μ+3δ)-μ)/δ
This will lead us to 
Z=3 Answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
