A simple answer using no algebra is this:  If she earned a salary of \$400 with a total payout of \$680, obviously she made \$280 over and above her basic salary (\$680 - \$400 = \$280).  Then you do simple short division to get the quantity of 14 phones (\$280 divided by \$20 for each phone = 14 cell phone plans sold)!

To write the equation, you can start with the answer of \$680.  She receives \$400 + \$20*plans sold:

400 + 20p = 680

20p = 280

p = 14

{\$400 + \$20 * 14 = 680}

Sam sold 14 plans to make a total of \$680.
