Denise made a total of 80 outbound calls on her shift at work today. Of those 80 calls, 55% ended with prospective customers rejecting the call, 15% ended with Denise leaving a voicemail message, and 10% resulted in a successful sale. What is the total number of calls on which Denise was rejected by customers today?

I'm a bit confused by your percentages.
 
55+15+10=80%
 
What happened to the other 20%?
 
Using the information you provided, we know that 55% of the 80 calls rejected Denise.
 
55% of 80 is your answer.
 
80 X 0.55= 44
 
Thus 44 calls were rejected by the customers. This number makes sense because 40 is 50% of 80, thus we can can expect that 55% of 80 is more than 40. 
 
The previous answer does not make sense because 12 is signivicantly less than 40.
12 is 15%, the number of calls that ended with her leaving a voicemail and, thus, haven not been rejected by the customer.

There is no sufficient information about remaining 20% of the calls.
For instance, those numbers could be busy or nobody picked up the phone.
