First, note that percent means per hundred. In this example, for instance, 35% means 35 per hundred.

That is: 35% ==> 35%/100% ==> 35/100

To reduce this fraction into its simplest form, divide both the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common factor:

Factors of 35: 1, **5**, 7, 35

Factors of 100: 1, 2, 4, **5**, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100

35/ 100 = 35÷5 / 100÷5 = 7/20

The simplest way to convert a percent into a decimal is to move the decimal two places to the left. In this case, 35% is converted into a decimal as follows:

35% ==> 35.0% ==> .35 OR 0.35
