The Soviet Union was alone in fighting Germany and its Axis Power allies in Europe.  They wanted a second front in  western Europe to take the pressure off of them by dividing Germany's military forces.  The fight in Italy was between the western Allies and Germany and Italy.  Italy was separated from the rest of Europe by the Alps--not  the 2nd front that would have helped the USSR.

The Soviet Union was suffering from large numbers of military and civilian casualties.
