This is how I approach these:

Think about what "28 less than" means. It's less than something else we don't know. Less is a subtraction.

Hence,

something - 28

That makes it "28 less than" than the something.

The "something" is "half of Lynn ma."

And half of Lynna ma is L/2, or (1/2)L, whichever way works for you. (I made it L so I could remember that's it's Lynn ma and not Barnstable ma. My stats instructor made fun of math people cause they only know the letters a, b, c, and x, y and z. :-) )

Now we know "something" is L/2.

So: L/2 - 28

That is 28 less than half of Lynn ma. That is also Barnstable ma. So B = L/2 - 28.

B + L is going to equal 135523

And we know B = L /2 - 28, so we substitute that in:

(L/2 - 28) + L = 135523

From here you solve for L.
