Process of elimination -- think about each possibility:
Metallurgical analyses sometimes mean melting or dissolving a sample in acid. If you had an ancient artifact, would you want to destroy the entire object, removing it entirely from existence, or to take small pieces and analyze the pieces, leaving most of the original object intact?
