IF A PLANE CAN TRAVEL 480 MILES PER HOUR WITH THE WIND AND 380 MILES PER HOUR AGAINST THE WIND , FIND THE SPEED OF THE PLANE IN STILL AIR

x=speed of plane in still air
y=wind speed
 
x+y=480
x-y=380
 
Let's add the two equations together to eliminate y...
x+y=480
x-y=380
 
2x=860
x=430
 
still air speed is 430 miles/hour
