I have a question on a practice test I was working on today. I can't understand it. I need help.

The difference between the length and width of a rectangle is 7 centimeters. Find the dimensions of the rectangle if it's perimeter is 50 centimeters

Hi Alex;
perimeter=[2(length)]+[2(width)]
first dimension...x
second dimension...x+7
50=[2(x)]+[2(x+7)]
50=2x+2x+14
50=4x+14
Subtract 14 from both sides...
50-14=4x+14-14
36=4x
Divide both sides by 4...
36/4=(4x)/4
9=x
first dimension....9
second dimension...16
Let's check our work.
50=2(9+16)
50=2(25)
50=50
