That depends upon which colonists you are talking about and when. The First Continental Congress sent a petition to King George asking for a redress of grievances in 1774. The First CC was willing to reaffirm their loyalty to the King. the Second Continental Congress also sent a petition, the more famous "Olive Branch Petition." This one, in 1775, promised that the colonies would not seek independence. The King ignored both petitions and in response to the second one declared the colonies in rebellion.
