Our variable for the equation is the number of boxes of popcorn.

Let's call that P.

The amount of money raised will be 2.50P

We want that the be equal to $140

The equation is:

**2.5P = 140**

To solve this merely divide both sides by 2.5

P = 140/2.5 = 56 boxes of popcorn sold to make $140

This problem assumes there is no overhead involved.

It does not take into account the original cost of purchasing

the popcorn (maybe it was donated), or buying salt/butter,

or other things. Thus, the problem isn't very realistic but,

the equation given is all we can do with the information

provided.
