If Carl owes $875 and also wants to save $500, then he has to have a grand total of:

 

$875 + $500 = $1375

 

If Carl makes $9.75 per hour, then Carl must work:

 

$1375 / $9.75 per hour = ~141 hours. Probably 142 hours just be on the safe side.
