1. "the sum of the number and 6" = x + 6
2. "the square of the sum of the number and 6" = (x + 6)2
3. "the square of the sum of the number and 6 is 169" = (x + 6)2 = 169
4. x + 6 = ±√169
5. x + 6 = ±13
6. x + 6 = 13 and x + 6 = -13
7. x = 7 and x = -19
8. (7 + 6)2 = 132 = 169
9. (-19 + 6)2 = (-13)2 = 169
10. therefore, the solution set for x is {-19, 7}

Let x = the unknown number(s).

(x + 6)2 = 169

x2 + 12x + 36 = 169

x2 + 12x - 133 = 0

(x+19)(x-7) = 0

x = -19 and 7
