I would first solve the inequality for y. y<-(1/2)x-1. On a graph, sketch the line y=-(1/2)x-1 as a dotted line since we have an inequality. Now we just need to figure out is the area is above or below the dotted line. Make it easy. Choose x=0 and we get y<-1 so the area is below that dotted line.
