Hi Kristin;
5(y+10)=40

Our first priority would be to divide both sides by 5...
[5(y+10)]/5=40/5
y+10=8
Next, we will subtract 10 from both sides...
-10+y+10=8-10
y=-2

Let's check our work...
5(y+10)=40
5(-2+10)=40
5(8)=40
