Let x = Sally's age now

Then x+5 = Cindy's age now

x-8 = Sally's age 8 years ago

(x+5)-8 = x-3 = Cindy's age 8 years ago

We are given that Cindy's age 8 yrs ago = 2(Sally's age 8 yrs ago)

So, x-3 = 2(x-8)

x-3 = 2x-16

x = 13

Sally is 13 and Cindy is 18
