This is a somewhat odd way to explain the role of independent and dependent variables but a real world example nevertheless. An independent variable is a factor that determines something. We call that something the dependent variable because it's dependent on the independent variable. One does not exist without the other. In this case the number of seats is dependent on the row number. So the independent variable is the row number. Hope that makes sense!
