after rewriting the mixed number as a fraction. how do you know which number to multiply?

5 1/3  * 1 1/8=     5/1+1/3=  ( 5/1 * 3/3 )+1/3 =    15/3+1/3=   16/3

1 1/8 =( 1/1 * 8/8 ) + 1/8=  8/8 +1/8=  9/8

mixed numbers now fractions
>2*8 *3*3< ---                             the numbers with the arrows pointing at them are the multiples that                                                      im not sure which to multiply for my solution
16  *  9      =
3        8         ____

>3*1 * 8*1  <

I know how to turn the mixed numbers into fractions, but I do not know which of the numbers to multiply that are on top of and below the fractions that make up the numerator and denominator...??

OK Elishia,

if you got

16  * 9  ,  you just reduce it and multiply top times top and bottom times bottom,
 3      8

or you first multiply to times top and bottom times bottom, and then reduce it.

So 16*9 = 144   and 3*8 = 24.

that gives you,

144,  which you can reduce it by dividing both numbers by 24 to get,  6/1 = 6.
 24

OR

reduce it first:

16 * 9
 3     8

(2*8) * (3*3) = now you cancel any number that is one the top AND the bottom...
 3            8

(2*8) * (3*3) = now you cancel any number that is one the top AND the bottom...
  3            8

so those crossed out numbers end up reducing to 1, so the top is (2*1) * (3*1) = 6,

and the bottom reduces to 1, so 6/1 - 6.

your answer is 6.

i hope this helps!!!, kim
