Matt is 3 times as old as Jan  In 7 years he will be twice as old as she will be then.  How old are they now

m+7=2(j+7)   two equations in two unknowns.solve by substitution of 3j for m in the second equation.
3j+7=2j+14
-2j=-2j

j+7=14
  -7=-7

Hey Barb -- since 7 yrs time triggers the age ratio change from 3x to 2x, we're dealing with multiples of 7 ... it's natural to try 7 and 21 for now ... in 7 yrs, 14 is half of 28 ... Best wishes, ma'am :)

Let's assume that Jan is "j" years old, then Matt is "3j" years old.
3j + 7 = 2(j + 7)
3j + 7 = 2j + 14
3j − 2j = 14 − 7
j = 7

Currently, Jan is 7 years old and Matt is 21 years old.
