I need to find the root and check my answer. X^2 + 5X - 14 = 0

I think the answer is X = 7 and x = - 2

You are so close! I'm assuming you factored the equation to get (x-2)(x+7).

Now set each of those equations to 0 to solve.

The answers to x-2=0 and x+7=0 are the roots.

So it should be broken down as X - 2 = 0

                                                +2    +2

                                               _____________

                                               X = 2

Because the -2 and the +2 cancel out each other.  So the answers should be

X = 2 and X = -7
