The equation below is used for Covalent Bonds, Molecular geometry, electron geometry, and structural formulas to figure the number of bonds in a molecule.
N-A = S equation to figure the number of bonds in a molecule
N = needed: the sum of the number of valence electrons needed by each atom (2 for hydrogen, 8 for all other atoms)
A = available: the sum of the number of valence electrons available for each atom
S = shared: the number of electrons shared in the molecule
S/2 = the number of covalent bonds in the molecule

Thank you very much,
"America's Science Problem" is the title of an article in the November 2012 issue of Scientific American. It is a surprisingly provocative look at the American political parties and their attitude towards making decisions based on facts. It is at once alarming and funny. Funny, because it is true. The abstract and lead paragraph are copied below.
The entire article can be purchased at http://www.sciamdigital.com/index.cfm?fa=Products.ViewIssuePreview&ARTICLEID_CHAR=64F06545-237D-9F22-E8096F93BCE27AA6 but the magazine is full of great articles this month.
Read it and think.
A large number of major party contenders for political office this year took antiscience positions against evolution, human-induced climate change, vaccines, stem cell research, and more.
Such positions are surprising because the economy is such a big factor in this election, and half the economic growth since World War II can be traced to innovations in science and technology...
Recently, after I tutored two of my favorite students to prepare them for upcoming tests in Pre-Algebra and Geometry respectively, I received positive reinforcement for the importance and value of customizing the tutoring approach, information, knowledge transfer, and tutoring style.
After the first tutoring session, I was approached by three people as I was waiting for my next student:
1. An elementary school teacher – she complemented me on my knowledge and tutoring style, and asked me for my information to refer students to me for tutoring.
2. A parent seeking a tutor for their daughter – he complimented me on my tutoring style, my patience, and my problem solving ability, He said, “I saw how you tutored him and I want you to tutor my daughter the same way” He booked a tutoring session for the next day.
3. An adult student preparing for a standardized test – she worked at the café, came over and said that she saw me tutoring the student and saw how he was excited...
SOH CAH TOA
When working with Right Triangles in any Math and Science subject, especially Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Chemistry, and Physics, many problems can be solved by remembering this Memory Jogger:
Indian Chief SOH CAH TOA (sounds like soow caah towaah)
Angle = A
Sine A = Opposite/Hypotenuse
Cosine A = Adjacent/Hypotenuse
Tangent A = Opposite/Adjacent
You can use these formulas to calculate and find missing angles or sides to solve various problems.

As a Chemical Engineer, I work on Math and Science problems all day, and tutor students in Math and Science in the evenings and weekends, including students from Elementary School to College Graduate School.
I help students learn to see how Math and Science can be fun and useful in daily life, school, and career choices.
All the best,
I'm new to this site and can't wait to help you. Got questions? I got answers! Whether you need some simple study skills and techniques or if you have very specific problems in a subject, I can help. Let me show you how all these subjects work together and are not isolated disciplines that you're never going to use. I'll show you the relevance of each subject and how they're all integrated. Learning is so much fun when you understand why you need to know.
If you're anything like me, at times you've wished for an easy way to work math problems and get the answer in the back of the book.Of course, you probably tried just copying the book's answers on to your homework paper only to have that "unreasonable" teacher of yours refuse to give you credit for all those answers!... something about not showing enough work.
Well, you're in luck! I've taken a couple of math concepts from the internet, combined and refined them into a technique will take answer you have, no matter how wrong or bogus, and "transmogrify" it into the answer in the back using simple algebra which you can use to show full work. I call this technique The Correct Answer Algorithm (it's so simple it needs a really complicated name to make it sound sophisticated enough to impress your teacher.)
So here it is... the algorithm which will in short order transmogrify your answer into the answer in the back of the book:
My name is Stephanie and I currently an undergraduate at Stevens Institute of Technology. I am studying chemical engineering and I am entering my last year. I have taken high level math courses including Calculus I, II, III, IV as well as Probability and Statistics and Differential Equations. I have also taken a variety of science courses including chemistry I and II and Biology, to name a few. Throughout High School I took Advanced Placement courses in history, math, and science. I am very well prepared to teach in science and particularly, math. I can also teach Spanish and other subjects if necessary. I am friendly and outgoing. Feel free to contact me at any time. The pay rate is negotiable. Thank you for your attention. I hope you have a great day.
