About Elise

I'm a college student from Cornell home for the summer willing to help you out in any subject you might need help with! I have worked as an SAT coach both in high school and college, as well as tutored for several years for Regents exams as well as on a weekly basis. I strongly believe that tutoring should continue over the summers in between school years, because if you don't use your knowledge that you have gained, you'll lose it. If you don't use it, you lose it! My favorite subjects are math and science, but I have tutored extensively in various subjects. I also think that learning should and can be fun! If a student is willing to come to tutoring outside of school hours, they are obviously a motivated and determined student, and I will reward that with engaging and informational games and activities. In my spare time, I love playing and watching sports, especially baseball and softball. I have been playing the cello and the violin for almost ten years.

My experience as a tutor started as a peer tutor in high school, and I eventually expanded my network of students to include several high schools around my hometown. I tutored for four years in high school, and I started my SAT tutoring as a senior in high school. At Cornell, I was accepted as a tutor in the Let's Get Ready SAT prep program that also included college counseling.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cello

I have been playing the cello for 9 years, and have been enrolled in private cello tutoring for 7 years. I have played in numerous orchestras both inside and outside of school, and have been the principal cellist in four orchestras. I have been selected to participate in the All-County Orchestra six times, and have competed in the New York State School Music Association solo competition several times, receiving scores of Excellent (over 90%) each time at the highest level of competition.

College Counseling

I worked for the Let's Get Ready SAT program that is based in NYC both as an SAT Match Coach and as a college choice counselor. I was responsible for completing a different college counseling activity each week -- including preparing the application, revising the personal statement, developing a list of best-fit colleges, as well as preparing a "brag sheet" to help teachers with recommendations.

Phonics

I was home-schooled in elementary school and learned to read from my mother who is well versed in the phonics method. I have since taught my brother, nieces, and nephews reading and phonics skills based on the materials that I have collected over the years including workbooks, flash cards, and even iPhone apps. I am also able to supplement the basic phonics methods with other strategies such as context clues and the "whole language" method.

Regents

As a Warwick Valley High School student, I completed the Regents curriculum and graduated in 2011 with an Advanced Regents Diploma. I have a multitude of resources to help with Regents exams, as both of my siblings also completed the Regents track. I am confident in all of the Regents topics.

Very smart and personable

When I first met Elise, I was surprised at how well she was able to teach algebra in a simple way. Elise helped my daughter understand the math problems without getting stuck. I would definitely recommend Elise for a tutor. She is great!
