WVU-Parkersburg (Elementary Education)
Welcome to my profile page. First let me give you a bit of background. I hold a BA in Elementary Education K-6 with a certification in English grades 5-9, as well as a Master's in Special Education-Gifted grades 1-12. I am well versed in planning and implementing lessons. I enjoy working with young people and have been active with the Ohio-WV Youth Leadership Association for 7 years. I was also a Girl Scout leader for 12 years. I have taught in Roane and Putnam counties. I have been teaching for eight years. In those eight years, I have found that many students have missed out on some vital concepts that will help them with writing, spelling, and grammar. My classroom is a place for learning, and students are always encouraged to take constructive criticism and implement it further. While I have spent most of my time with middle school students (grades 6-8) and gifted students (grades 1-8), I enjoy working with high school students as well.
I believe that working one on one with an individual gives the tutor and the tutee the opportunity to spend more in depth time working on concepts that need addressed. I love when a student finds his/her "Aha!" moment. Seeing the proverbial light bulb come on is one of the best feelings in the world (for teacher and student).
I am available most evenings from 3:30-6:00, but I can also be flexible with the times. My preference for tutoring location would be a public place, such as the public library. I may be available on some Saturday mornings. I really want to make the learning experience fun and worthwhile. So, we can work on time frames on an individual basis. Welcome to my profile page. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Test prep can often lead to anxiety. I have experienced that anxiety. I believe that because of my background I am more than able to provide strategies to assist in lessening the anxiety of the testing process.
I have taught English for eight years. In that capacity, it has been my pleasure to share the intricacies of the language with students from grades 1-8. I have tutored several students in English and have found strategies that work for each individual. I have also used those skills to mentor gifted students.
Grammar is very important to me. I am the child of an immigrant who worked very hard to learn English and then passed that on to my siblings and myself. Knowledge and usage of appropriate grammar skills help make writing much easier to read and understand.
As a voracious reader, I have read numerous books of differing genres. While I enjoy fiction, adventure, and mystery most, I also enjoy reading non-fiction. Reading is a vital part of any educational experience.
I love words! I also enjoy learning how to use unusual words to make my writing more rich in content. I like to focus on the root of unknown or unfamiliar words in conjunction with context clues to determine the meaning of words.
I have always been an extremely conscientious writer. I pay attention to detail and work hard to ensure that information is presented in a logical format. Writing is a passion of mine, and I hope to one day publish my own novel.
