About Douglas

Greetings! Thank you for visiting my profile. I am a doctoral student at West Virginia University in music composition who is well-rounded in many subject matters. Although I have experience as a graduate assistant tutoring freshman and sophomore music students, I have always been a natural tutor to peers since the first grade. On the other end of the scale, I really enjoy helping international college students who need assistance with their English. As an overcomer of ADD/ADHD, I understand the difficulty and challenges that some children (and adults, too) have trying to learn material in a classroom that may not be effectively designed for them.

I enjoy helping others succeed and am very patient when it comes to helping students understand a subject that is difficult for them. You will be pleased to know that my tutoring style focuses on leading the learner toward the path that leads to correct answers, for finding solutions requires knowing how to get there, not just pointing out the answer. I do not do homework for anyone, but I am effective in designing examples that help students make connections to real problems. Encouragement is the best model for students, and I do not belittle them for answering incorrectly. I also have a talent for judging the right measure of both pushing and encouraging students to be their best; each person is different, and I value that.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As someone who has learned to live with ADD/ADHD, I have become aware of the difficulty faced by children (and adults) who don't always live in a world where the classroom is set up for their style of learning. We ADD folks are hands-on experiencers; we learn by doing. I also believe that having ADD brings us advantages that others do not. Our ability to hyperfocus can be channeled when we are aware and learn how to make use of this unique ability. I have helped others cope with ADD, and I really do believe that I can teach you or your child to succeed with this challenge.

Composition (Music)

Not only do I have a master's degree in music composition (and working on my doctorate in the same field), but I have experience teaching composition lessons. I have given composition lessons for class credit as a graduate assistant, and this is ultimately what I want to do for the rest of my life in a college somewhere when I am able to do so. The concepts of composition reach across broad categories of music, since it is based on the foundation of Western classical music.

Ear Training

I am qualified to teach ear training for my educational background, current profession, and experience teaching the subject. I have a degree in music theory and composition that includes the necessity of passing an aural skills exam. My profession as a composer naturally requires proficiency in ear training. Finally, and most importantly, I have taught ear training classes in the past as part of a master's graduate assistantship.

General Music

I have two degrees in music, and am currently working on a third. I have taught general music, both formally and informally from children through college-aged adults. I am well-rounded as a musician with knowledge in several specific areas, such as music theory, aural skills, music sight-reading, music history, and music composition.

Music History

I am a doctoral student in music composition, and as such, I am required to know a great deal about music history, since knowing stylistic processes of composition in each era are important to my trade. I have had 12 hours of post-graduate music history study, and will complete three more by the end of the spring 2016 term. Further, each doctoral student at West Virginia University is required to pass a comprehensive six-hour music history exam before receiving candidacy for a degree; I have been studying for this exam for the past three years and am confident that I will succeed.

Phonics

As a music student with a vocal emphasis in my area of concentration, I have taken a three-hour class in diction, which gives each student a comprehension of phonetic pronunciation and spelling. This includes learning the international phonetic alphabet (IPA). This applies to the simpler process of learning to read and speak using English phonics.

Sight Singing

I am a professor of music at an NASM certified university where I teach Fundamentals of Music, which includes sight-singing as a part of the curriculum. Additionally, I formerly administered sight-singing exams as a graduate assistant while working on my advanced music degree.

When sight-singing myself, I understand where the problems are and how to overcome them, which translates well to teaching others how to sight-sing.

Soccer

As a former soccer player in high school, I understand the skills and on-pitch awareness required by the player. As a former coach of U-14 boys, I understand the importance of teaching the basics of drills, the gain of skill aptitude, and putting it all together. As a former referee (U-16 boys and under), I know the laws of the game, how to use them to your advantage, and I've seen it all.
