About Kay

I am pleased to announce that I was recently certified as an Associate Educational Therapist. An Educational Therapist is more than a tutor. In addition to tutoring, I help students learn how they learn and how they can use their strengths to accommodate their weaknesses in order to achieve personal, social, and academic success.

I am a veteran teacher with more than two decades of teaching adolescent and adult students with learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, and emotional behavioral issues. My passion for teaching is still very strong, and I miss it after being sidelined for four years due to a car accident. I also miss having contact and communication with learners.

My last teaching experience was at a small community college on the southern Oregon Coast where I lived on and off for almost 10 years. For the last five of those 10 years, I taught ESL, GED prep, developmental reading, study skills, and college success. My students were of various ages from 16-67 and of varying abilities. During my time at SWOCC, I helped 110 students earn their GEDs. I was a proud teacher when they received their diplomas.

Please contact me if I can assist you in your academic progress and learn more about my availability and approved subject areas for future lessons. As an Educational Therapist, invite me to help you overcome your emotional stress related to academic struggles.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have a master of science degree in learning disabilities and behavior disorders from Johns Hopkins University. I am a veteran special educator who has taught adolescents with learning disabilities, behavior disorders, ADD/ADHD for over 25 years. I have taken a special interest in students with ADD/ADHD because I found them very challenging to teach in an academic setting. I have learned a great deal about this learning challenge by attending conferences and reading many books on this subject, especially those written by Thom Hartman and Dr. Edward Hallowell.
