About Austin

Hello! My name is Austin and I used to teach at the Washington County Juvenile Center in Marietta, Ohio. While there I realized the value of having that little extra help until something clicks. I pride myself on being thorough and using individualized approaches in relation to the student and the material. All subjects can be fun and exciting with the right approach.

I currently substitute teach for the Mongalia County Board of Education, where I have passed all state and local requirements, in clouding a background check, to supervise and educate students.

I also tutor in other areas, but me degrees and certifications are in the above listed. I am organized in my methods and consider myself highly effective in my teaching style of creating a fun, engaging learning space.

There are no questions too big or too small. Remember, the only dumb question is the one never asked.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I took the ACT and have assisted students in this field. I have successfully helped students achieve a score of at least three points higher than their first attempt at ACT English.

Adobe InDesign

I was layout manager and eventually Editor-in-chief for a newspaper. For years I used InDesign to layout the issues, including pictures, copy and headings.

Adobe Photoshop

Because of my former layout editor and Editor-in-chief position for a local newspaper I feel I am qualified to tutor in Photoshop. We used that tool for all photo editing needs and it is something with which I became quite familiar.

Ballet

I studied at a dance for fifteen years, during which time I participated in numerous performances and even taught classes to the youths there.

Bible Studies

My degree is in religious studies and much of that focus in on Bible Studies.

Business

I completed several years of business management coursework at Marietta College and have taught business classes locally.

Career Development

I worked for sometime as a professional career counselor. Those duties included resume revision, job application assistance and job placement.

Chess

I have played chess with and studied with some masters, learning some of the classic techniques and competing in tournaments.

College Counseling

I worked with Residence Life at West Virginia University and the Office of Admissions at West Virginia University. These two fields, I feel, gave me the experience necessary to assist anyone in the college counseling process.

Cooking

I was raised in the household of a professional caterer and spent many of my childhood and young adult days in a kitchen. As an adult I have worked in restaurants, doing everything from cooking to bar tending. I wrote restaurant reviews for a newspaper and have cooked for several large events.

Criminal Justice

For the past five years I have worked in the court system as a bail bondsman, bail enforcement agent, private investigator and a private process server. Working in this field and studying the laws therein make me more than qualified to assist anyone with studies in criminal justice.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked in a Juvenile Center as a professional tutor. Some of the students were at this age and I assisted them in the required subjects.

Elementary Math

I have tutored in elementary math during my time at the juvenile center and with other private clients.

ESL/ESOL

During my time in D.C. I worked with foreign students and professionals to strengthen their English and enhance their written and verbal communication skills.

Handwriting

As a teacher I have instructed students on the correct formulation of letters in both print and cursive.

Piano

I studied classical piano for 15 years. I also taught and played with bands and other professional musicians for a number of years.

Political Science

I have, in my role as a teacher, taught political science in the classroom.

Public Speaking

I have been a parliamentarian and toast master for years. I am well versed in speach composition and deliverance, as well as accent reduction and modification.

Religion

My degree is in religious studies.

Social Studies

I taught social studies classes in my role as a teacher in Ohio.

Study Skills

As a teacher I have assisted many students with developing and maintaining positive study skills.

Theatre

I am an inducted Thespian, was Secretary of the troupe in my hometown and once worked as an acting coach. I have experience in set and costume construction as well as directing, stage managing, lighting and makeup.
