About Kenneth

Hello, I am a private tutor working with college students in Huntington, West Virginia. I have been tutoring many students here in English Literature and am currently working as a writing instructor at Mountwest Community and Technical College. I have a B.A. in English from Ohio State. I have also worked for a number of years at the Marshall University H.E.L.P. Program, assisting students who have learning differences of varying degrees of severity.

I enjoy working with students who want to realize their potentials and goals. The years I have spent tutoring have been extremely rewarding and my students have greatly improved their grades while working with me. My students appreciate the fact that I am patient and take the time to explain complex ideas in more easily understood terms. They also like how I will challenge them to do their best and always encourage their efforts to excel. I am also a keen student of the history of Europe, the world, religion, and music. Most of my tutoring experience has been with students attending Marshall University and Mountwest Technical and Community College and I usually meet with them at Drinko Library on the MU main campus. I am also open to working with high school students.

My approach to tutoring is that I want to put the student at ease about the subject while demystifying the discipline. I have found that breaking large tasks into smaller, more manageable pieces is the best way to go. Working methodically in this way will make an overwhelming task much more easy to do. I always try to engage your interest by sparking excitement and a passion for the subject. I want you to see the purpose of the assignments the teacher has given you and make a connection with the material to understand the importance and significance of what you are learning.

For me, explaining difficult concepts and making my students feel confident that they are grasping the material is a top priority. I will take the time to make sure you understand the major ideas that form the foundation of what you are studying so that you have a context on which to build meaningful knowledge. My goal is to give you the study tools you need and guide you through the process as you go about doing assignments and preparing for exams, providing tools and methods that will help you succeed.

I look forward to working with you and helping you get the most out of your education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

European History

I have extensive experience tutoring students in medieval and modern European history. Much of my training has focused on the development of the western world as it has been shaped by events in Europe over the last two millennia. I have read a great deal on this subject and can access a number of resources which can be used to aid students taking these courses.

As a writing instructor, I assist students daily with writing grammatically correct sentences. I can explain the rules and reasons for using proper forms of words. I can provide tips and resources for the student to improve his or her skills in this area.

All my life, I have been a huge fan of literature. I can guide the student in the study of American and British novels and poetry. I am familiar with many authors from other countries, as well.

World History

The story of human civilization has always fascinated me. I have been studying it for many years and I have thought a lot about many of the reasons why things happened the way they did. I feel that my knowledge of and passion for the subject will help guide the student to gaining a firm grasp of World History.

I have been writing for many years and have had a great deal of success in working with students to improve their writing skills. Writing takes a lot of practice, but it can be fun if you know how to work with words. I can help you become a better writer.
