About David

I tutor reading, public speaking, study skills, critical thinking, ESL and ASVAB in the Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia Tri-State areas. I am interested in tutoring in an on-line environment as well as in person.

I have taught ESL abroad as well in the United States and Canada. I have taught reading proficiency to children and adults. I have tutored ASVAB to over 30 military applicants, all whom have passed successfully. I have taught public speaking to actors, business professionals and teachers. I have tutored many for the TOEFL. I believe that education and knowledge are the keys to success and that one's goals are attainable with the correct skills.

NOTE: I am unable to travel at this time, so all lessons must be conducted at my office in Ashland.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ASVAB

I tutor the ASVAB according to DoD guidelines, using their recommended study materials and pretest. Based on the students goals for his/her Military career, we identify those areas that the student is weak in or needs improvement so that they may take the test with confidence and pass. I have been tutoring ASVAB for over 10 years, and have never had a student not achieve their military MOS.

Some areas may be weak due to perceptual or cognitive deficiencies, and these can be addressed as well, but my primary focus is to prepare the student for taking the test, and passing with sufficient score to attain their desired MOS. I extend this to good study habits which will carry the student through "A" school and beyond.

ESL/ESOL

I am a graduate of the Cambridge University level 5 DELTA ESL training course with a Pass A grade. This is the highest level and rating that an ESL/TOEFL instructor can have, above the CLETA certification.

I have taught ESL in China, South America and the United States. My students were everything from kindergarten level children to Post Graduate level young adults to business men and adults with no formal education at all. I am sensitive to cultural and economic issues that often prevent or exclude many persons from learning English as a second language. I have been tutoring ESL for over 20 years.

Law

I provide tutoring for first year law students and paralegals: understanding legal terminology, research methodology, document preparation, organizing your Case Binder, the history of law. (All LAW101 classes and all paralegal subjects.) I have also organized and conducted mock trials to provide students as well as licensed attorneys a place to hone courtroom presentation skills.

Public Speaking

I have tutored Public Speaking for over 20 years. I have tutored actors, politicians, business men and teachers as well as high school and college level students. I understand that the need for being tutored in Public Speaking can vary from social shyness to needing a competitive edge. I work with the student to over come obstacles, and develop a clear accurate voice and range, to understand the use of gestures and body language as well as the psychology of public speaking.

My teaching teaching methodology touches on etiquette, self-confidence, video and audio recording and playback, the use of acting as a modality of overcoming shyness, the psychology of your audience, and perfecting presentation tools and skills.

Reading

I provide reading and comprehension tutoring for those who need help progressing with these skills - primarily for 7th-12th grade but also for adults and foreign immigrants who need help learning to read the English language.

Study Skills

I come from a long line of Medical Doctors, mostly surgeons. One thing we all agreed on as far as succeeding at school, and indeed at work was the need for excellent study skills. As my father always said: Anyone can be a doctor, lawyer, astronaut... IF the have great study skills.

Today, the US is declining in the number of science and technical graduates that we need to keep America at the top of those fields. One reason for this is the lack of curriculum's within public schools to teach great study skills. This is not for lack of desire or motivation: it is due to budgetary and administrative issues that teachers cannot control. Tutors who give students great study and time management skills offer their students a edge in the competitive world of higher education, and indeed, long after graduation and entry into the job market. Throughout my 30 years as a professor and educator I have always provided my students with that extra edge by teaching good study skills.
