For years, I wrote for a "Fortune" 500 company subsidiary. Later I was a book and curriculum editor for a major specialty publishing house and other clients. Currently, I am studying rhetoric through Harvard Extension.

My writing has appeared in publications from "Country" to the US Navy's "deckplate." I have written resumes professionally and have taught writing for over 20 years.

In my work with business and government clients--scientists and executives at the highest levels--I helped them express information needed to make decisions of international importance.

I help students break cycles of failure and step into success. My teaching style is a bit out-of-the-box, as I look for ways to build motivation and interest while using various learning styles.

I first took the SAT at age 12. In tenth grade (a year early), I took the PSAT a year early and became a National Merit Semifinalist. I was admitted to Johns Hopkins but chose a college that offered a scholarship. There, I tested out of a semester of classes. My B.A. was completed in 3.5 years while I worked and raised a family, with nearly enough history for a minor.

I have taught reading, writing, and speaking for over 20 years. I mentored my dyslexic son as he applied for and earned an M.A. from Johns Hopkins. As a "retired" homeschool mom of 15 years. I've taught grades 1-12 in nearly every subject besides advanced math and science. I have also tutored for Hood College and public schools.

Our family was mentored by teachers, a reading specialist, and a principal. I develop custom curriculum in most subjects based on student interests. I had to learn how because my kids were dyslexic, but it's much more fun for every student.

If you are curious about whether working with me is a good fit, please reach out. I offer several levels of service to meet client budgets. I am happy to give an estimate with no obligation.

Career Development

Writing and talking about yourself are challenging for most people. I help clients looking for new positions to get past those hurdles. I wrote resumes and cover letters professionally in my local area for five years. Before that, I maintained and edited all the resumes of corporate professionals for a "Fortune" 500 subsidiary. Many of my clients aspire to higher-level positions; I help them position themselves as fully qualified to begin the new position, even if they have never done it before. One of the other ways I can help is to assist in preparing for interviews. We go over questions and work out strong answers ahead of time to increase confidence. I would love to help you take bold steps forward in your career, too. Various accommodations to your budget can be arranged. Please reach out to set up details.

Homeschooling presents its own challenges. Parents sometimes wonder if they are qualified to teach every subject at every level to their children. Having professionals to turn to can help families through occasional rough spots. I am a retired writer and book editor who enjoys sharing my enthusiasm and expertise about books and writing with students. As a teacher, I have worked with homeschooled children for a total of 15 years in most subjects; I have 20 years total as a reading and writing coach. I also teach social studies/history. Please contact me if you think your English program could use a bit of fun and excitement.
Phonics,

Phonics

I am qualified to teach phonics because I have 12 years of experience tutoring this subject under the guidance of a reading specialist. I spent extra time on the subject with students who struggled with it and have developed games and other strategies to maintain interest. I have also used phonics to teach spelling. A B.A. in English Literature, which included a teaching assistantship, rounds out my qualifications.
Reading,

Reading

My students go from F's to A's. I have taught elementary reading for a total of 12 years. My approach takes into account the student's interests, strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. I have worked with students with dyslexia and ADD as well as many with IEP's. My own children struggled with reading, so I understand the frustrations of both parents and kids. For that reason, I take a lighthearted approach with my students, as so many have come to dread reading before they meet me. I incorporate fun activities such as games and interesting books on topics the students like. My goal is that my students come to love reading, and because of that they become excellent readers.
Spelling,

Good spelling is essential to academic and career success. Although English has a bit more complicated spelling than many other languages, there are rules and principles that apply in most cases. As a tutor of home schooled students for 15 years, it was my job to organize the students' entire setup for education. This included setting schedules, making a study area, and seeing that it all happened daily in spite of home interruptions. In the course of tutoring other students, I have found that setting up and following a study plan that accounts for their family lives, schedules, abilities, and inclinations makes all the difference between success and failure. I particularly enjoy seeing students improve in this area, as they begin to enjoy success and gain hope for the future.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Few things are more embarrassing than realizing one has used a word the wrong way in front of an important person. Another situation that makes everyone cringe is wanting to get just the right word but knowing you are missing it. A broad vocabulary is key to success in academics and business, as well as life in general; unfortunately, effective vocabulary study is not emphasized in most curricula, even at the IB and AP level. Word expertise enables students to get high scores on the SAT, ACT, and other standardized tests and to get higher grades in English. My bachelor's degree is in English Literature, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve to make vocabulary study efficient and fun.

I believe very strongly in building motivation by finding material that students enjoy and getting some fun into their English sessions--but I make sure the details don't slip through the cracks, either. I have so much fun with books, and I love spreading that enthusiasm to my students! I was a professional writer and book editor for many years, as well. I took the SAT in 7th grade as part of a Johns Hopkins study and scored higher than the average college-bound freshman. In 10th grade, I took the PSAT a year early for practice and to everyone's surprise--including my own--I was named as a National Merit Semifinalist. As a sophomore, my SAT scores in 1982 were in the 99th percentile. Now, I teach the newest version of the test. My students receive instruction on tips and tricks as well as content. I teach the SAT portions related to English exclusively. I would love to give your student the benefit of my many years as a professional writer and editor when he or she enters that testing room. The SAT reading and writing portions have some quirks that few tutors are aware of, even those who specialize in it. Or, they may be vaguely aware and not really know what to do. Basically, perfectly competent students can be kept from their potential on the test through no fault of their own. I tackle this head-on by providing students with weapons to fight back. I also of course teach content. These days, very few students are getting everything in class they need to do well on the test, even at the "best" schools. I save my clients time and money by evaluating which areas need to be covered and spending all our time on them. Many parents are aware that the SAT changes from time to time and ask if I am teaching to the newest version of the SAT. The answer is yes, as a professional it is my business to always keep up to date on what is going on with the test. I seek out the best, most accurate, and most up-to-date materials available for my students. One of my recent students saw a 70- point increase in his Reading and Writing section score. What will your increase be? If this sounds like a good fit, reach out to arrange an initial session.

I help students get better grades on tests and papers in American History. As an experienced writing coach who nearly had enough credits to major in history, I bring my interests and experience to each coaching session. Living in a historic house and participating in various activities related to American history for fun have informed my background. I like to help students understand more than just the facts but the story behind the story to help them understand and remember what happened and why.

I am a retired professional writer and book editor with 20 years of English teaching experience. I have written and edited for executives at the highest levels of government and industry, including the military and a "Fortune" 500 subsidiary. Another of my clients has been a nationally prominent constitutional law attorney. I use this experience to coach students in writing application essays for undergraduate and graduate school that showcase their unique abilities. Writing about yourself is one of the hardest kinds of writing. Part of what I do is listen and help students understand themselves better in order to write strong, meaningful application and scholarship essays. I also help students prepare for interviews and consult on the college selection and application process. College choice, essays, and interviews are all very important; please contact me to help you put your best foot forward.

Study Skills

Study Skills

As a tutor of home schooled students for 15 years, it was my job to organize the students' entire setup for education. This included setting schedules, making a study area, and seeing that it all happened daily in spite of home interruptions. In the course of tutoring other students, I have found that setting up and following a study plan that accounts for their family lives, schedules, abilities, and inclinations makes all the difference between success and failure. I particularly enjoy seeing students improve in this area, as they begin to enjoy success and gain hope for the future.

My students have experienced rapid progress.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

Remarkable skills

Gina rewrites my resume to match the job I’m applying for and she sells my skills beautifully she makes me feel beautiful with words. When I attach my resume. I feel very confident about me applying for the position. I have applied for positions and right away I’m offered other positions without me informing the entity of my interest. My resume speaks for itself. Gina’s rates are very fair. Gina is very prompt with her responses which makes it assist me best with application deadlines.

Amazing!

Didn't take her more than 20 minutes before she knew exactly what was troubling my daughter. My daughter enjoyed it and we have scheduled another session for next week.
